A Brief History of Miss Minnie and the Robbins Hotel
Miss Minnie & Me Antiques & Gifts and Miss Minnie’s Pecan Company are located in
downtown Beatrice, Alabama. The location is on the corner of Robbins and Main
Streets in a home built in the 1920’s on the grounds of the historic Robbins Hotel.
Beatrice was established at the turn of the 20th Century when the Louisville and
Nashville Railroad constructed a rail line between Selma and Pensacola. Mr. Quigley, a
contractor for the railroad construction, purchased a large amount of land from Mrs.
Barbara Robbins who sold all but 5 acres surrounding her home. This newly purchased
property was then platted into streets and lots and sold by Mr. Quigley. Enterprising
Miss Minnie Robbins, daughter of Barbara Robbins, and Mrs. Rachel Davison, turned
the home into a hotel for passengers traveling by rail. The hotel boasted 14 rooms,
each with a fireplace. Miss Minnie ran the hotel alone from 1936 until 1948 when Mr. O.
B. Finklea of Buena Vista, Alabama purchased the hotel. Faithful hotel guests who
arrived late at night, after which time the servant had gone to bed, would register in
the lobby where a sign read, “Leave your dollars on the bed when you check out”!
The rent was $2.50 and $3.00 for a night in a room with snow-white bed linens
turned down ready for occupancy and flowers in vases. Who could ask for more?
Beatrice began as a community of lovely, well-educated townspeople. There was, in
Beatrice, an abundance of doctors, dentists and skilled tradesmen. Business flourished
until the 1960’s and 70’s. Today, Beatrice is enjoying a new sense of community as
efforts are made to beautify the streets and recreate an ambiance of days gone by with
an up-to-date flare. Driving through Beatrice you will enjoy the lovely historical
lighting and banners. Crepe Myrtles planted at the Centennial bloom and grow along
the town streets. At Christmas, the streets and highway are alight with beautiful
holiday lighting.
The spirit of Miss Minnie lives on in the little shop in what was once her front yard.
Shaded by a large pecan tree, Miss Minnie & Me Antiques & Gifts and Miss Minnie’s
Pecan Company successfully meet the needs of customers for miles, states and
countries around! Come visit us to see how this special small town is succeeding in
